Day 2: Memory Drawings and Altered Books

One of my favorite activities we did was the Memory Drawings. In my personal artwork I am very concerned with memory and memories: preserving, documenting, archiving...exploring ways to attempt to capture them in new ways. The Memory Drawing became the basis for my project book.

After learning transfer techniques on Day 1, we put them to use in our altered books. I had a very tiny book and I wanted to create something intimate and personal in that space. I decided to make mine about being pregnant with my youngest child, Nathan. The first image that popped in my head was Leonardo's sketch of a fetus and it became a recurring image in the book. I also used ultrasound images and my journal entries that I recorded during the pregnancy.
