flag book/ class translation

This is a great project to do with kids. I think card stock would hold up well. Interdisciplinary possibilities abound with cross references into all subject areas: language arts, science, social studies, language arts, even math. Also workable with all ages and learning abilities if you create options for different learning styles, ie. color code where the folds and glue needs to go. My sixth grade class last year had 36 kids and 23 of them had IEP's, a lot of emotional challenges and autism... all the folding and gluing could get confusing, but color coding could help, although it would require class prep for the teacher, Another option would be to put the students to work in teams of two pairing thoughtfully the partners. This approach would be good for building relationships in the classroom too, especially useful at the beginning of the year as an ice breaker class bonding, community building project. Each partner could do one side of the book about his/herself or about the other person after a brief interview, then they could glue it together and create the story book, sharing each other's story with the class.
I love this idea and will definitely make some brightly colored examples to share with both students and teachers.
