The project book is an assignment that I will be using in my Advanced Placement Studio Art classes next year. The students must complete a ‘concentration’ section as a part of their portfolio. The content mapping is a strategy that will work beautifully. In the past, a ‘tree’ structure of brainstorming, narrowing and narrowing more has worked, but the ‘mapping’ process can visually promote the thinking that these students need. This compact version of this process will be more successful than how I have instructed in the past.
Usually this process of decision-making takes about 6-8 weeks, experimenting, narrowing and reviewing to make their final choices of the direction their work will take. Just like Lauren said, it is frustrating to see so many empty pages of a sketchbook. The smaller format, more specialized book will make the students take ownership.
