One minute sculpture

I went into the one minute sketches thinking they had to be perfect figure studies. Not an easy task for me as it takes me some time and plenty of erasing and redrawing before I can get the image correct. After the first sculpture I realized there was no way these could be perfectly drawn figures and this was a liberating idea. Just look at the figure and let the pencil do the drawing. When it was all over I was please with what I had done and even more so when I went back and water-colored the images. I think this would be a great liberating tool for older students, especially those that don't think they can draw very well. Adding in some sketchbook research such as A Cezanne Sketchbook and Henry Moore's Sheep Sketchbook would further reinforce the notion that one minute drawings do not, in fact cannot, be perfect renderings. Another aspect of the project was coming up with a creative way to present the objects at hand. It got us up and moving and thinking creatively. This was one of my favorite lessons.
