Images from Brice Marden, Work Books and Robert Motherwell,The Dedalus Sketch Books. These images demonstrate a great way to introduce abstraction and its formal roots and as an artist- educator open up a larger world to students by studying cross cultural connections in art from early history to contemporary... compare and contrast the use of particular mediums such as ink and brush... How did the artist depart from realism to abstraction. In the case of Robert Motherwell, one could focus on the blind contour, a return to early childhood and/or working intuitively...release of control...

  1. I loved these sketches, too. The comments you made about the roots of Abstraction are excellent.
